Some time ago, me and my peers were assigned to become foley artists for a day. We spent some time to record many different sounds for a clip from the original Super Man cartoon. The whole experience was definitly eye opening, it gave me a new found appreciation for the foley artists behind our new and old favorite shows. After we were done with editing the sounds and putting them into the video one by one, we were presented with the final product of our hard work.

  • The Process

We were given the task to create various sound effects that matched the silent clip they gave us. We created sounds like, creaking, doors opening, footsteps, etc. All of us took turns, and even suggested what objects we should use. We were also allowed to bring objects from home, and for me, I brought a pair of dice accesorie key chains and slowly russled them between my hands against the recorder, the friction caused it to make a soft grinding noise which perfectly blended in with the background of the labratory in the clip. When were done with producing the sounds, we also took turns editing the video, me and my partner worked around the last minute of the video while the other groups worked on the other points of the video.

  • The Results

  • Final Thoughts

I was honestly surprised by the results by the end. It was a great feeling of accomplishment when we played it in front of the class and compared it against the original Super Man clip. We were shocked when we watched the original version, ours was nothing like it, there was no background music and the sound effects were a bit underwhelming. We all agreed that ours contained more emotion and suspense, due to the way we added more details than the original clip. This whole activity really changed my view on film production, and all the little details that existed that I didn't even know about.

In conclusion, this whole project was a very humbling experience, and was probably one of my favorite activities I've done the whole year.
